🌊 THE SWELL
What's Building Beneath
Science before it hits the news
Most technology revolutions announce themselves loudly. Excitonics has been quietly doing something far more significant — building the foundational science that will make the photonics wave look like the opening act.
Here are the three developments you should have been watching. Most investors haven't heard of any of them.
The Michigan Breakthrough: The World's First Excitonic Switch
In September 2025, engineers at the University of Michigan's Excitonics and Photonics Lab published something that will be referenced in computing history textbooks. They built the world's first device capable of controlling and directing the flow of excitons — the quantum quasiparticles at the heart of this entire field — at room temperature.
"You can see the limits of electronics being reached now with AI and other demanding computations consuming energy and generating heat like crazy."
— Prof. Parag Deotare, University of Michigan Excitonics and Photonics Lab
Here is why this matters in plain English. For decades, scientists knew excitons could theoretically carry information faster and cooler than electrons. The problem: excitons have no electric charge, which made them almost impossible to steer. You couldn't apply a voltage to push them the way you do with electrons. They were like trying to control smoke.
The Michigan team solved this by engineering a silicon dioxide nanoridge — a microscopic ramp — covered in a single-atom-thick layer of tungsten diselenide. They then used photons of light to both create excitons and push them along the ridge in a single, controlled direction.
The result:
📏 4 micrometers — exciton transport distance achieved at room temperature. First time in history.
⚡ Under 0.5 nanoseconds — travel time, faster than most transistors
🔊 19 dB switching ratio — sufficient for advanced optoelectronic applications including AI data centers
The team has already filed for patent protection through Michigan's Innovation Partnerships office. Their stated next step: connecting hundreds of excitonic switches together to form the first excitonic circuit.
This is the transistor moment for excitonics.
The transistor was invented in 1947. It took until 1971 for Intel to put 2,300 of them on a single chip. We are in 1947 right now — but the timeline will be far compressed.
📌 Also in The Swell — July 2026
Researchers at the City College of New York published new findings in Nature Materials on excitons in van der Waals magnetic materials — linking light, electric charge, and magnetism in materials just a few atoms thick. The paper opens a path toward magnetic exciton polariton condensation and microwave-to-optical signal conversion for quantum communication. DARPA is among the funders.
When DARPA funds something, pay attention.
📌 Also in The Swell — July 31, 2026
École Polytechnique and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf published the world's first photonic time crystal in Nature. Operating in the terahertz range — 1,000 times faster than conventional electronic components — these structures represent a new frontier in light control that sits directly in the path of excitonic computing development.
The wave keeps building.
💥 THE BREAK
What's Hitting Now
Stocks, funding, company moves
While the science has been building quietly, the markets made noise this week. Two days ago — August 12, 2026 — Lumentum Holdings reported its fiscal Q4 earnings and the photonics sector lit up across every trading terminal simultaneously.
Lumentum's Numbers: Revenue Doubled. Guidance Higher. Stock Surged.
Lumentum's fiscal fourth quarter revenue more than doubled to $1.01 billion — exceeding expectations of $987.70 million. For the current quarter, Lumentum expects revenue between $1.225 billion and $1.275 billion — well above analyst expectations of $1.157 billion.
— Yahoo Finance · August 12, 2026
The stock surged 8% in premarket on the report. More importantly, it dragged the entire photonics sector with it. Applied Optoelectronics rose 4%. Coherent gained 5.6%. POET Technologies added 2.6%.
This is how sector waves move — a leading name reports, and the market reprices the entire group.
2026 YTD Performance — The Photonics Wave:
Ticker | Company | 2026 Gain |
|---|---|---|
AAOI | Applied Optoelectronics | +390% |
MRVL | Marvell Technology | +228% |
COHR | Coherent Corp | +242% (past 12 mo) |
LITE | Lumentum Holdings | +138% |
CIEN | Ciena Corp | +113% |
POET | POET Technologies | +100% |
POET Technologies: $400 Million and a New Board
POET sits closest to the excitonic side of this sector. Their POET Optical Interposer™ integrates electronic and photonic devices into a single chip using semiconductor manufacturing techniques — the bridge between today's photonics and tomorrow's excitonics.
In May 2026, they closed a $400 million institutional raise at $21.00 per share — a single investor wrote that check. In August 2026, they announced two new board members: Dr. Bardia Pezeshki and Jean F. Rankin — signaling governance professionalisation ahead of a major commercial push.
In March 2026, POET announced a strategic collaboration with LITEON Technology to co-develop next-generation optical modules for AI applications. LITEON is one of the world's leading optoelectronic semiconductor manufacturers. This partnership gives POET global manufacturing scale — a critical gap that previously concerned institutional investors.
Watch Next: Coherent's Earnings
Coherent Corp is due to report imminently. Analysts expect fiscal Q4 revenue to rise 30% to $1.98 billion — the highest growth pace in three years. Coherent is a recognized NVIDIA Ecosystem Innovation Partner for co-packaged optics.
A second consecutive blowout from a major photonics name would likely trigger another broad sector re-rating.
Reddit's r/stocks community has been asking the same question in recent weeks: "Is photonics just getting started?"
The institutional money answered that question months ago. The retail wave is just beginning to form.
🌀 THE RIP
The Danger Beneath
The warning most newsletters won't publish
The photonics wave is real. The science is real. The revenue is real. None of that means you should close your eyes and swim directly into this sector right now. Here is what the bulls aren't telling you.
⚠️ Rip #1 — The Velocity Problem
AAOI up 390%. COHR up 242%. LITE up 138%. When stocks move this far this fast, they attract two types of buyers: informed long-term investors who understood the thesis early, and momentum traders who have no idea what a photon is.
The second group now outnumbers the first in these names.
When the next broad market selloff hits — and it will — momentum traders leave first and ask questions later. These stocks will correct 30–50% before the underlying thesis changes at all.
Position sizing matters more than stock selection right now.
⚠️ Rip #2 — The Cramer Indicator
On August 13, 2026, Jim Cramer publicly advised investors to skip POET Technologies and buy "proven" photonics names instead — specifically LITE and COHR.
We are not here to relitigate Cramer's track record. What matters: when a trade gets popular enough for Cramer to opine on it, the easy money in the obvious names has likely already been made.
The contrarian read: POET — the most technically interesting name in the sector, with $400M in fresh institutional capital — may now be the more interesting asymmetric bet precisely because the crowd just rotated away from it.
⚠️ Rip #3 — The Excitonics / Photonics Conflation
Almost everything moving in this sector right now is photonics — optical fiber, transceivers, co-packaged optics. True excitonics — the excitonic switch, the optoexcitonic circuit — remains a 5–10 year commercial timeline.
If you are investing in photonics stocks believing you are buying excitonics, you are one layer ahead of where the technology actually is. That is fine as long as you know it.
The danger is expecting excitonic breakthroughs to move photonics stocks next week. The science and the markets are operating on very different clocks.
⚠️ Rip #4 — POET's CFO Is Leaving
Buried in POET's May 2026 $400M raise announcement was a disclosure: CFO Thomas Mika — ten years with the company — has informed the board of his desire to retire.
A CFO departure during a period of major capital raising and commercial expansion is a flag worth watching. It may be entirely benign. The new institutional investor who just wrote a $400M check certainly knows. You should know too.
The Rip does not mean the wave is wrong. It means the wave has a dangerous current beneath it that will pull you under if you are not paying attention. Surf with your eyes open.
🏄 THE SHORE
Where to Position Yourself
The one actionable takeaway from this issue
Every issue of Excitonic Wave ends with one clear, actionable position. Not a stock tip. A positioning framework — where to stand so the wave works for you rather than against you.
This week's Shore: Stop chasing the break. Start watching the swell.
The stocks that have moved 100–390% in 2026 have already priced in a significant amount of the photonics story. The asymmetric opportunity — where you invest $1 and have a reasonable shot at $10 to $20 — is not in buying LITE at $858 after it started the year at $78.
The asymmetric opportunity is in positioning around what the swell is telling you will happen next.
→ Watch Coherent's earnings print.
Due imminently. Analysts expect 30% revenue growth to $1.98B — the highest pace in three years. A beat means the sector reprices again. A miss means The Rip pulls hard. This is the most important near-term catalyst in the space.
→ Research POET with fresh eyes.
$400M in institutional capital. A manufacturing partnership with LITEON. Eight industry awards since 2024. A platform that directly bridges photonics and excitonics. Cramer just told retail to avoid it. That alone makes it worth understanding deeply before the crowd reverses.
→ Build your watchlist now, before the retail wave fully arrives.
The r/stocks community is just starting to ask "is photonics just getting started?" When that question reaches r/WallStreetBets in volume, the move will already be mostly made. Be ready with your thesis before the crowd needs one.
